Interview: JDG

Currently wrapping up a huge tour of the US, young gun Melbourne DJ/producer JDG has been dominating crowds and charts around the world. He recently hit No.5 on the ARIA Club Chart with his collab with Samual James, 'Mumbai' as well as reaching the top 10 of the Beatport Electro House Chart. His breakout success can be pinpointed to his innovative and consistent releases over the past year that have been heavily supported by some of the biggest DJs in the world. While his touring schedule doesn't seem to be slowing down, JDG took some time out to chat with us ahead of the Bounce Sessions tour.

How did you get into music production?

I was actually Djing first and a family friend who let me borrow he's equipment one day gave me a cd with 'Fl Studio' on it and from that day onward I spent everyday learning and getting my ideas down! I never thought that CD would turn out to be such a huge part of my life.

Your collaboration with Samual James 'Mumbai' has been dominatingthe Beatport charts and has been supported by some of the biggest artists in the world, were you surprised by the reaction you have received?

I don't think me & Samual ever had such hype around a track before, its so humbling you know these guys are my idols its so surreal, definitely inspires me to work harder and do greater things

You have recently toured the US, how did that go?

Yeah touring North America tour has been insane, such a great experience and eye opener! although it is very tiring…it's so so worth it!

What was your favourite show on the tour?

That's a hard one, so many awesome shows I really loved them all! but I really loved Venue in Vancouver, Sound Nightclub, Drais. wow! and of course Miami with the Aussie crew!

What can we expect from you for the rest of the year?

Plenty of originals I've been working hard to find a new sound and experiment a lot more, i really want a solid amount of tracks out this year so keep an ear out!

Which artist would you love to collaborate with and why?

I'd have to say KSHMR, the guy is nailing every track he's done, he's ideas are insane, and also because he helps all of his followers online with music production tips, samples & feedback! Also seeing how appreciative he is of his fans, that alone makes him a great artist in my eyes.

The Melbourne sound has definitely established itself in the world of dance music, how are you innovating and keeping your sounds fresh?

I'm definitely trying to push the boundaries and see what I can do to differentiate my particular 'Bounce style' whether it be different bass patterns, unique leads, incorporating different genres and stepping away from the typical sound that has been drained a little bit, I'm always working on something new and experimenting. Sometimes they're bad, sometimes they're cool it's a long process!

You've recently been asked to mix the latest Ministry of Sound Compilation Bounce Sessions 2. How did you feel when you were asked to mix the compilation?

When I got asked I was like.. "are you serious right now?" It has always been one of my main goals! The Annual 2007 mixed by John course was actually the reason I started Djing/ Producing so its an awesome feeling getting to mix my own CD.

Were there any challenges with the track selection?

The track selection couldn't have worked out any better, all of the songs are 100% what I would play live and are doing really well in my sets!

Are there any secret weapons on the compilation that is your 'go to' track in your sets?

I'd have to say Twoloud - Outside World (Original Mix) is one of the coolest tracks I've heard in the last 6 months, awesome style and not to mention the main lead is ridiculously clean!
