"If you want something done right, sometimes you just have to do it yourself". In a world filled with false gurus and misguided leaders, so goes the mantra of the New York duo Walker & Royce. After a swift rise in recent years – during which time they pioneered a sound that is often imitated but never replicated – Sam Walker and Gavin Royce have used this mantra as the impetus for their debut album "Self Help", released on October 20th via their label home Dirtybird and its Australian label partner, etcetc.
"My Own Thang" is lifted from "Self Help" and sees Melbourne MC Sophiegrophy on vocal duties. Born in Nigeria and raised in New Zealand, Sophie Olowookere, better known as Sophiegrophy is an Australian rapper, singer and song writer. With other feature artists on the album including the legendary Green Velvet ("Rub Anotha Dub"), the young Aussie is in good company.
"If you haven't heard of rising Australian emcee SophieGrophy yet, it's time you get educated. The Melbourne-based rapper is on one hell of a come-up this year, an ascension accelerated after dropping her EP Purpularity and making several high-profile guest appearances. Her latest feature is on house duo Walker & Royce's new track "My Own Thang," which – as her lyrics accurately describe – will literally have you "turning up all week."" – Highsnobiety
